Facial peels are a safe non-surgical procedure used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and other blemishes. The procedure uses a liquid solution to peel away the top layers of skin to give you a youthful appearance over time.
Procedure: There are three types of peels; light, medium, and deep. Light peels, alphahydroxy acid, are done quickly and have a very short recovery time. Medium peels, trichloracetic acid, treat moderate damage to the skin. Deep peels, phenol acid, are an extreme deep skin peel that only requires one procedure for long lasting results. The procedure takes 10 minutes for light peels and up to 1-2 hours for deep peels. The solution is applied to the skin and there is a slight burning sensation that alleviates as the solutions mild anesthetic begins to work. The solution then peels away the top layer of skin giving you your new youthful look. The procedure can be done in the office or as an outpatient treatment.
Post-op: After the procedure, you will experience temporary dryness, redness, flaking, and some swelling. Daily activities can be resumed right away for light peels, after 10 days for medium peels, and 2 weeks for deep peels. Light peels and medium peels may require more than one treatment to get the desired look you want. Complications are rare but they include, uneven skin pigmentation, infection, scarring, and overexposure to the sun. It is important that as your skin flakes you do not peel your skin, this can lead to scarring. It is also important that you wear sunblock to protect your skin.
